Night Vision Viking
An avid hunter from Sweden, Night Vision Viking, was overwhelmed by the overall stunning quality of the Merger LRF XT50.
It has an exceptionally detailed image, wonderful zooming capabilities, a superb field of view, and a new, amazing feature. Keep on reading to get his full thoughts on the fresh Pulsar thermal imaging binoculars.
As a gear tester for over 15 years, I’ve been fortunate enough to put my hands on various devices. Yet, after trying out the new Merger LRF XT50, I’m sure that I’ve found my new favourite.
I can confidently say that if you’re looking for the best thermal binoculars on the market, you’ve come to the right place. While, apart from the metallic grey cover, the Merger LRF XT50 looks similar to the other models of the Merger line, it’s what’s inside that matters.
When you take a more detailed look, you discover the key differences. Some of them are very discrete, and others are more substantial. What sets the Merger LRF XT50 apart is its exceptional thermal performance, thanks to its HD 1280×1024 @ 12 µm sensor. With these binoculars, I’ve been able to see finer and sharper details, including antlers, at longer distances than ever before.
Compared to the Merger LRF XL50, the sensor of the new Merger LRF XT50 offers 66% more pixels. Even though I didn’t count them, the difference is clear.
All this power, combined with smooth zooming software, means that you don’t have to compromise between an incredible field of view of 17.5 °, and the occasions when you need to magnify and identify a potential target. And if you need to verify the distance to the object, just use the integrated laser rangefinder to know in an instant.

The Merger LRF XT50 is also the first Pulsar device to get the new digital image stabilisation feature, which improves image sharpness, reduces artefacts resulting from shaking hands, and helps avoid motion blur.
I quickly got used to the fresh specification. I now find myself using it all the time because a steady and highly defined image minimises the time it takes for the brain to understand what’s going on, and what’s out there.
The digital stabilisation feature makes a huge difference regardless if you’re running around in the forest, or sitting as still as possible. In previous cases, where I had to settle for a fuzzy, pixelated image, I now get sharp details with the Merger LRF XT50.
Overall, the excellent unit delivers beyond what was previously possible with other thermal devices.
